## The problem

Furniture is the forgotten layer of shelter.

Emergency response has an order of operations: water, food, medicine, a roof. Furniture never makes the list — and then the shelter opens. Classrooms in emergency schools run without desks. Clinics improvise without cots. Families in collective shelters sleep, eat and do homework on the floor, sometimes for months.

It is not that anyone forgets people need somewhere to sit and sleep. It is that conventional furniture is spectacularly bad at crossing into a crisis zone.

  • It is heavy

    A steel-frame school desk is built to survive decades in one room. Every kilogram of that permanence has to be trucked over damaged roads and carried up shelter stairwells by hand.

  • It ships mostly air

    An assembled bed frame is a large box of empty space. A truck that could carry bedding for a whole shelter carries frames for a corridor of it instead.

  • It is slow and expensive to move

    By the time institutional furniture is procured, shipped and cleared into a crisis region, the acute phase is often over — and the freight bill can exceed the furniture bill.

  • It has no exit plan

    When a temporary shelter closes, its furniture becomes a disposal problem: too worn to redeploy, too bulky to store, too mixed-material to recycle.

## The approach

Cut flat. Score once. Fold into strength.

SEF furniture starts as a sheet of recycled corrugated cardboard and a cutting pattern. Every unit — bed, desk, chair, partition — is die-cut and scored flat, then folded into shape on site. The folds are not a compromise; they are the structure. Folding corrugated board along its scored lines turns a floppy sheet into box-section beams, the same principle that lets a cardboard box carry books.

Because the strength comes from geometry rather than fasteners, there is nothing to attach: no screws, no bolts, no adhesives, no tools, no assembly crew. Tabs lock into slots. An untrained adult follows the numbered folds printed on the panel itself, and the unit stands.

Because the material is corrugated board, everything else follows. The packs stack flat and dense on a pallet. One person carries several units at once. Local box plants near a crisis region can cut the same patterns from the same standard sheet stock — so production can move close to the need instead of shipping across it. And at end of life, the unit goes back into the cardboard recycling stream it came from.

## The material

Recycled corrugated board, specified like an engineering material.

Corrugated board is two flat liners with a fluted paper wave glued between them — a miniature truss that is nearly all air by volume and surprisingly stubborn in compression along the flutes. SEF structural panels use multi-wall board: two or three fluted layers laminated together, cut so that the flutes run the direction the load does.

The board is made from recycled fibre, and it is a commodity: the same sheet stock is produced by box plants on every continent, to well-understood grades, on machinery that already exists near almost any crisis region. That ubiquity is a feature we design around, because it is what makes local production licensing realistic rather than aspirational.

  • Structural panels

    Multi-wall board with flutes aligned to the load path, used for bed decks, desk tops and chair shells.

  • Surface treatment

    A moisture-resistant coating on wear surfaces handles spills, wiping down, and humid indoor air. It is a coating, not a promise of waterproofing — we say so plainly in every product sheet.

  • Print layer

    Assembly steps, tab letters and care notes are printed directly on the panel in pictograms and short text, so the instructions cannot be separated from the furniture.

  • Single material, by design

    No screws, staples, plastic clips or laminate films. What arrives as one material leaves as one material, which is what makes the recycling claim true rather than decorative.

## Assembly

The manual is printed on the furniture.

There is no booklet to lose and no video that assumes a phone, a signal and a language. The numbered steps are printed directly on each panel, in pictograms first and words second. This is what they say, in full, for the bed:

Every unit in the line follows the same grammar: fold the spine, raise the walls, lock the tabs, press to seat. Someone who has assembled one SEF piece has effectively assembled them all — which matters when the people setting up a shelter are its residents.

Disassembly is the same steps in reverse. A unit folds back flat for storage, redeployment to another site, or the recycling bale.

About the numbers on this page. Dimensions and load figures are current design targets from our workshop prototypes, stated as targets on purpose. We will publish measured, independently load-tested figures with each product sheet as testing completes — and nothing before. SEF does not publish numbers it has not measured.

Designed for the truck before the room.

Humanitarian procurement is a logistics problem wearing a furniture costume. What decides whether a shelter gets furnished is rarely the unit price — it is pallet positions, kilograms per stairwell, customs weight classes, and what happens to the material afterwards. SEF is designed backwards from those constraints.

Why cardboard is the point, not the compromise

Every alternative material buys durability the situation does not need and pays for it in weight, cost and disposal. A shelter bed does not need to last thirty years; it needs to exist this week, hold up for the months it is needed, and disappear cleanly afterwards. Recycled corrugated board is the one structural material that is simultaneously cheap, light, printable, locally produced on every continent, and already inside a global recycling loop.

Sustainability here is not a certificate stapled on at the end. The unit is made of recycled fibre, ships with a fraction of the freight of conventional furniture, can be produced near the need instead of shipped across the world to it, and leaves as raw material for the next sheet.

## The lifecycle

From sheet to shelter and back to sheet.

A SEF unit's whole life is a loop, and every stage is deliberately boring: standard sheet stock, standard cutting machinery, standard pallets, the ordinary recycling stream. The only unusual moment is the four minutes in the middle where a flat pack becomes a bed.

  • 1 Order

    An agency, NGO or municipality names the rooms — kits or units — and gets pricing and pallet maths back with the product sheets.

  • 2 Cut

    Patterns are die-cut and scored from recycled multi-wall board — at our production partner, or at a licensed box plant near the response.

  • 3 Palletise

    Packs stack flat and dense. A pallet is a wing of beds or a classroom of desks, wrapped and labelled by kit.

  • 4 Ship

    Ordinary palletised freight, no special handling. Locally cut orders may skip this stage almost entirely.

  • 5 Assemble

    Staff and residents stand the units up themselves, following the steps printed on each panel. No tools, no crew, no waiting.

  • 6 Use

    Daily service for the working life of the shelter. Worn units are swapped for the cost of cardboard; folded spares store flat in a corner.

  • 7 Recycle

    When the shelter closes, units fold flat and leave as baled fibre for the next sheet — the loop closes where it started.

## Design principles

Five rules every SEF pattern must pass.

Each product in the line, and every future one, is checked against the same short list before a pattern is released. If a design needs an exception, the design is wrong.

  • 01 Logistics first

    The unit is designed backwards from the pallet, the truck and the stairwell. If it ships badly, it does not matter how well it sits.

  • 02 Geometry over hardware

    Strength comes from folds and closed sections, never from fasteners. Anything that needs a screwdriver has failed the brief.

  • 03 Honest material

    Cardboard is presented as cardboard — its limits stated in the product sheet, not discovered in the shelter. No figure is published before it is measured.

  • 04 Producible anywhere

    Every pattern must be cuttable from standard sheet stock on standard box-plant machinery, so production can move to the need.

  • 05 Dignified by default

    A bed off the floor, a wall of one's own, a desk that takes a lesson seriously. Emergency furniture is still furniture for people.

Local production licensing. For sustained responses, shipping cardboard across the world defeats the purpose. We license our cutting patterns and quality specifications to capable box plants near the crisis region, so units are produced local to the need — faster, cheaper, and with the freight taken out of the equation. ## Where we actually are

SEF is an early-stage startup incubated at An-Najah National University's Innopark in Nablus, founded in 2026. The product line exists as working workshop prototypes; load testing and pilot conversations are in progress. We would rather tell you that plainly than imply a deployment history we do not yet have.

What we will publish, as it becomes true and checkable: measured load-test results per product, assembly times demonstrated on video by first-time assemblers, and — with partners' permission — units deployed and shelters furnished. Until then, those numbers stay off this page.

We come from a region that knows displacement first-hand. Emergency response is not an abstract use case here; it is the neighbourhood's reality, and it is the standard the product is being built to.

## FAQ

The questions procurement always asks.

Cardboard — will it really hold an adult, every night?
Folded corrugated board is a different structure from a cardboard box. The scored folds form closed box-section beams, and load is spread across many of them. Our design target for the bed is 150 kg in repeated daily use; measured, independently tested figures ship with each product sheet before we ask anyone to rely on them.
What about water, spills and humidity?
Corrugated board and standing water are not friends, and we won't pretend otherwise. SEF units are intended for covered, indoor shelter use. Panels carry a moisture-resistant coating for spills and humid air, and a soaked panel is replaced for the cost of cardboard — which is part of the design philosophy rather than a workaround.
Isn't cardboard a fire risk?
Untreated board is combustible, like most shelter furnishings including mattresses and blankets. We are evaluating fire-retardant treatments and will publish test results when we have them. Meanwhile we state the material honestly in every product sheet so safety officers can apply the same spacing and heat-source rules they already use.
How long does a unit last?
The design target is months of daily indoor use — the working life of a temporary shelter, not of a house. When a unit wears out, it is replaced for a fraction of conventional cost and the old one is recycled. Longevity is deliberately traded for weight, price and end-of-life cleanliness.
Can it be manufactured locally?
Yes — that is half the product. Any capable box plant with die-cutting or CNC cutting can produce SEF patterns from standard corrugated sheet stock. We license the patterns and quality specs so production happens near the crisis region, cutting freight, lead time and emissions at once.
What does it cost?
Per-unit and bulk humanitarian pricing is quoted on request, sized to undercut the true landed cost of shipped conventional furniture. Local production licensing is priced separately. Ask for the product sheet and we will include current pricing for your quantities and region.
What happens at end of life?
The unit folds back flat and enters the ordinary cardboard recycling stream — it is a single material with no fasteners to strip. A closing shelter leaves bales of recyclable fibre instead of skips of broken frames.
How does preparedness stock hold up in storage?
Flat packs stored dry, off the floor and out of direct sun keep for years — the same conditions any box plant uses for its own sheet stock. A pallet of SEF packs occupies a fraction of the bay that assembled frames would, which is what makes pre-positioning affordable in the first place.
Do you sell to individuals?
Not at the moment. SEF is built for institutional response — agencies, NGOs, municipalities and their logistics partners — because that is where one order furnishes a whole shelter. If that changes, this page will say so.
